2012 Forum Mawson Lakes
With July upon us so too was the time for this year’s TechNet SA Forum the venue this year the Mawson Lakes Campus of the University of South Australia. This Forum is the tenth in the series of forums presented annually by the committee of TechNet SA. A full programme for the day was organized for Friday 6 July in one of the most recently refurbished buildings on campus, Building F.
Professor Nanda Nandagopal, DSTO Chair, Defence Systems & Dean International Division of Information Technology, Engineering and Environment made the Official Welcome address. He indicated his belief in the importance of TechNet SA forums given the rapid pace of technological evolution.
In support of his presentation “Low Energy Mobility”, the first presentation of the day, Senior Research Fellow Dr Peter Pudney of the University of SA, bought along his three wheeled electric vehicle that had been driven 28,000 Km around the world in 80 days at a cost of $400 of offset renewable energy. His discussion pointed to some of the alternative modes of transport as we transit the peak oil period.
From the Team Synergy Training Institute, Stacey Copas presented “Resilience with Results” giving an insight and direction to working through difficulties while continuing to produce results.
Professor Adrian Linacre, South Australia Chair in Forensic Science Forensics, challenged the audiences knowledge of basic physics in his presentation, “Blood Splatter Analysis....the real CSI”.
The presentation detailed the use of the laws of physics in gathering evidence from blood splatter at a crime scene.
Paul Shepherd, Senior Technical Officer, University of SA in his presentation “Interactive Pathology” discussed his work in developing an interactive teaching tool for base level pathology.
Dr Paddy McGee, eResearch SA, “Visualisation Support” outlined the capabilities of the visual presentations that can be achieved using the computing linked video projectors within the suites of the eResearch SA facilities at the University of Adelaide. His presentation was concluded with a discussion of his work of a simulated journey through the solar system.
The day ended with the traditional tours through some of the facilities of the host University. On this occasion one tour group were shown through the recently completed $50 mill MM Building and Building V (Mawson Institute), while another toured the Water Treatment Quality Laboratories and Mechanical Engineering. A third group toured the Civil Engineering Laboratories.
